School system agrees to sale of West Side to LaGrange College

Dec. 19, 2014

The former West Side Magnet School may soon have a new owner. Troup County’s Board of Education agreed Thursday to the sale of the property to LaGrange College for $1 million.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement in principle on the sale of this property before the close of the academic year,” said Dr. Cole Pugh, Superintendent of Troup County Schools. “We know the building will continue to serve its original purpose of education for the benefit of the citizens of LaGrange and Troup County while also providing much needed revenue to the school system.”

In 1957, the school opened as West Side Junior High. Since then the facility has housed both elementary and middle school students. Due to budget constraints it was closed in 2012 and then re-opened in the fall of 2014 to temporarily accommodate Ethel Kight students and staff during the construction of their new school.

“Located in the middle of our campus footprint, this property is a natural extension for us,” said LaGrange College President Dan McAlexander. “It will help provide needed space for our expanding academic programs, several of which have outgrown their current facilities.”

Enrollment at LaGrange College has been record-breaking in recent years, with the last two academic years seeing the highest and third-highest new-student populations at the school. To realize the space for the purposes of higher education, modifications would be needed.

“Our rising academic profile has resulted in rising student demand,” Dr. McAlexander said. “Once the purchase is complete, we will begin to evaluate how to maximize the space to enhance our students’ already excellent outcomes.”
