Stevens receives distinguished service alumni award

Nancy Kight Stevens of LaGrange was awarded the LaGrange College Distinguished Service Alumni Award during commencement ceremonies May 19.

Stevens received her bachelor's degree from the college in 1971 and followed that with a master's degree in education in 1974. She also earned educational specialist certification from Auburn University, and educational leadership certification from the University of West Georgia and Columbus State University.

She retired in 2001 as principal at West Side Magnet School. During her tenure there, West Side was selected as one of 36 schools across the United States for a five-year grant with the Getty Trust and the Annenberg Foundation and was honored as the most exemplary arts program among the 36 schools.

In 1999, she was selected by the Getty Foundation to participate in a series of workshops in England to promote discipline-based arts education.

Her work with the college has been stellar. She served as a member of the Leadership Council from 2001–2007 and as president of the council from 2005–2006. She was secretary of the Board of Trustees, is a member of the Executive Committee of the board, established the Nancy K. Stevens Scholarship at the college and is a recipient of the Wall of
Outstanding Alumni Award.

Stevens is active in her community. She is a member of LaGrange First United Methodist Church where she serves on the board of trustees, is a member of the altar guild and was chair of the staff/pastor-parish relations committee. She is retired executive director of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, as well as a member of its board and guild. Her
other activities include LaGrange Junior Service League, the LaGrange Art Museum, Troup County Historical Society and the Spectator Book Club.

She is married to Robert Charles Stevens, also a LaGrange graduate (BA '71, MBA '81). They have two children, Ansley Stevens Scoglietti and Caroline Clark Stevens, and a grandson.
