College philanthropist Lovick Corn passes away

Sept. 26, 2013

Lovick P. Corn, longtime LaGrange College supporter and volunteer, passed away today in Columbus.

Corn chaired the college’s Investing in Values campaign, which raised more than $37 million for the institution from 1995 to 2000. He also served on the Board of Trustees for 28 years.

“For more than three decades, Lovick and his wife, Betty, have unselfishly given of their time, energy and resources to enhance the student experience here,” said college President Dan McAlexander. “Their example of quiet, faithful stewardship has been a blessing to us and countless others.”

In 2006 the couple was honored with the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation’s Stanley S. Kresge Award for their longstanding support of United Methodist-related education.

The Corn name is familiar to many on campus. At the conclusion of the Investing in Values campaign, Mr. Corn was honored with the naming of the Lovick Pierce Corn Professorial Chair in Art History. The permanent collection of art housed in the college’s Lamar Dodd Art Center includes significant works acquired through the Corn family.

Also, Corn Auditorium in the new Lewis Library is named in honor of Mr. Corn’s mother, Pauline Pierce Corn ’13.

A native of Macon, Mr. Corn graduated from the University of North Carolina and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  Before his retirement, he was vice chairman of the executive committee of the W.C. Bradley Company.

His community service included service on the governing boards of the Cotton Foundation, Epworth by the Sea, Wesleyan College and LaGrange College.

Mr. Corn received an honorary doctor of laws degree from LaGrange College in 1995. He also was honored as a member of the college’s “greatest generation” of volunteer leaders at a celebration in 2005.
