Library to host open house during First Week
August 19, 2016
Students returning for First Week activities will find something new on the schedule – an open house at Frank and Laura Lewis Library on Aug. 28 and 29.
The inaugural event will feature prizes, giveaways, snacks and drinks, according to Lindsey Lowry, Access Services Librarian. It is designed to introduce students to services offered at the library.
“We want them to feel comfortable about coming in, talking to us and asking for help,” she said. “There are so many things we can do to help students, and we want to make sure they know about them.”
Freshmen are required to attend a session, either from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday or 1 to 3 p.m. Monday. Returning students also are welcome to participate in any activities or contests, Lowry said.
As students enter the library, they will collect a game card they can complete by earning stickers from the five stations set up around the building that spotlight different aspects of the library. A short task at each area will be required to earn a sticker.
“For example, I am running the ‘Technology Petting Zoo,’ and the students will answer a quick survey about technology in the library,” Lowry said.
Lowry will set up cameras, laptops, iPads and headphones to illustrate everything the library has available for checkout or use in the library.
At the circulation desk, students will learn about the new Study Room reservation system and how to renew checked-out items. The Catalog and Stacks station will show students how to look up and find books on the shelves.
Once all the game cards are turned in at the prize table, a grand-prize winner will be drawn and announced at Fair on the Hill on Aug. 30. The grand prize this year is a Mini Jambox Bluetooth speaker from Jawbone.
In addition to the grand prize, each station will be giving away door prizes such as T-shirts, selfie sticks and coupons for a free breakfast from Chick-fil-A.
Tickets to the always-popular hypnotist show Sunday night also will be given away.
“We have six front-row seats (three winners of two tickets each) available,” she said. “To win, students must answer the puzzle on the library’s digital signage correctly, and we will draw from the correct answers. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. at the Open House, and students must be present to win.”
While not required, a photo booth complete with hats and props will be available. All photos will be posted to the library’s Facebook page.
Other First Week activities will include the annual Spirit and Traditions kickoff and the President vs. Provost football contest and halftime activities on Saturday, Honor Code ceremony and President’s Reception on Sunday, First Week service project and annual Beach Bash at Callaway Gardens on Monday, Fair on the Hill on Tuesday and Convocation on Wednesday.
