Summer camp offers opportunities for students
May 9, 2011

Summer camp offers opportunities for studentsFood, fun and service are combining for the college’s annual Learn 2 Serve camp, an academic camp for rising fifth- through eighth-graders to be held June 13 through July 1.

Sessions will be from 8:15 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Turner Hall. Lunch and snacks will be served.

This year’s theme is “Food for Thought,” according to Lindsey Lingenfelter, camp director.

“We will look at how food affects us locally, nationally and internationally,” she said. “We’ll also be focusing more on service, and have several service projects lined up, including working at a soup kitchen, a local farm/garden and a food drive.”

Afternoon activities will include games, sports and swimming, but the service component is key, Lingenfelter said.

“Each week we will guide the students in an organized service event for our community,” she said.  “We are also fortunate to have the same teachers and coaches returning to lead this year’s camp.”

Students will participate in two academic classes during the morning session that will be taught by four teachers who hold master's degrees.

“This summer program offers students many opportunities to build positive social behaviors related to forming and maintaining relationships, assertiveness in problem solving and critical thinking,” Lingenfelter said. “Value will be placed on respect for individual differences.”

The camp will offer a blend of academic studies, physical education and service-learning opportunities.

“Service -learning is a form of education where students learn what is needed to fix a pressing community problem and then actually implement their solutions,” Lingenfelter said. “The goal of the program is to provide students with an exciting learning environment that promotes mental, social and physical well-being.”

The cost is $225 for all three weeks, with a discount offered for families with multiple campers.  Go here to access this year’s Learn2Serve application.
