Book signing to feature Interface chairman
Oct. 26, 2009

LaGrange College will host Ray Anderson, founder and chairman of Interface, at a book signing to celebrate his new work, “Confessions of a Radical Industrialist.” The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Frank and Laura Lewis Library.

Anderson has been a champion of the “green” movement for 15 years, after challenging the executives and employees at his commercial carpet company to take nothing from the earth that can’t be replaced by the earth.

Since then, Interface has cut greenhouse gas emissions by 82 percent, fossil fuel consumption by 60 percent, waste by 66 percent and water use by 75 percent. It also has invented and patented new machines, materials and manufacturing processes, as well as increased sales by 66 percent, doubled earnings and raised profit margins.

“Ray Anderson is a shining example what we can do if we resolve to combat our impact upon the environment,” said Dan McAlexander, LaGrange College president. “Interface has become a beacon of what can be accomplished if we commit ourselves to making a difference, and has served as an inspiration to our college and it sustainability efforts.”

Anderson was named one of Time magazine’s Heroes of the Environment and one of’s Top 15 Green Business Leaders in 2007.  He and Interface have been spotlighted in three documentary films, including “The Corporation” and “So Right, So Smart.”  He co-chaired the President’s Council on Sustainable Development and the Presidential Climate Action Project.  He and Interface have been featured in The New York Times, Fortune, Fast Company and many other publications.

Anderson has a long relationship with LaGrange College, having served as a trustee and now as a member of the President’s Advisory Council. He has been an active champion of the school’s sustainability efforts, which include the first Energy Star-rated college facilities in the state, a soon-to-be LEED-certified library, and the distinction of being one of the first 10 schools in the nation to submit its Climate Action Plan to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.

During the book signing, a brief program will be held at 5 p.m. Guests may park in the College lots across from the library along Vernon Street, and cross the Gulley Gateway to the event. Books will be available for purchase.
