LaGrange College has awarded six incoming students with the institution's most prestigious Presidential Scholarships.

Joseph Miller, Dean of Enrollment Management, said a record number of students participated in this year's event.

"We had 112 of the best and brightest high school scholars from six states come to campus in February for the Presidential Scholarship Weekend," he said. "During that time, they participated in interviews and leadership activities. We were thrilled with the caliber of young men and women who joined us."

The top honor, the Presidential Learning and Living Scholarship, is awarded annually to a male and female applicant, and provides full tuition, fees, room and board. Ellen Freeman of Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville and Christopher Smith of Collins Hill High School, also in Lawrenceville, earned the top prize.

The Presidential Learning Scholarship covers all tuition costs, and was awarded to Ashley Chafin, Lakeside High School, Martinez, Ga.; Lauren Schexnayder, Northgate High School, Newnan; John "Oakley" Starling, Middle Tennessee Christian School, Brentwood, Tenn.; and Amy Webb, Troup High School, LaGrange.

Scholarship recipients were selected by a panel of judges.

"We look for students who have completed a strong college preparatory curriculum," said Joseph Miller, Dean of Enrollment Management at the college. "They also must show evidence of an exceptional record of service to school, community or church."

All six winners will begin their studies at LaGrange in the fall.
